Making a Familiar Difference
He only builds what is absolutely necessary to create a particular composition, and as such generally only models fragments of buildings rather than buildings in their entirety. He is also not obsessive about recording detail as fact, seeking instead to summarise and focus the observer on specific details of interest, as he edits with the knife, before recording with his camera; a compositionally eccentric chimney here and prominent air conditioning unit there. Through this, colour and degrees of detail can be exaggerated to draw the eye, in contrived scenarios that purely exist as summaries of type.

Additions and Subtractions
When visiting this location with the artist he talked of the interest in the clear additions made to the building over recent years, again presumably reflecting the nature of the building’s use to house multiple occupants who have very specific needs. Through a formalist photographic approach, including the removal of any figurative representation, vehicles or other urban distractions and the reduction of colour saturation through photographing on days with muted light, the viewer can purely focus on what is being presented – the new windows in the roof, the incongruous bay window, the multi-faceted facades of this structure. It was clear in this instance that there was no need to construct a model. There was nothing that needed to be removed in order to make his point.
