The multi-layered nature of the line and its way of expressing reality are examined through drawing, painting, photography and digital media. Heinzel's approach resembles processes which occur in the brain. Images are filtered, manipulated and converted in order to allow a different perception of our environment.
Her main interest resides within the line which affects us everywhere in our daily lives. For example, in fireworks, woodlands, water surfaces, as nebulae and heavenly bodies, as contour lines on maps, as ink in water...The line represents a basic "information carrier" and is equipped with qualities which establish a very personal "catalogue of meaning" for the artist.
In her paintings, Nicole Heinzel carves out lines into layers of oil paint with various tools like cutters, branches, palette knives etc. The reduced range of colour and the minimalist language of form in her current works focus the observers attention on to the essential.
In her "sharp" paintings the image area is covered with hard lines. Heinzel uses digital media as an interposing filtering system during her creation process in order to transform the analogue and the tangible in to a kind of hyper-reality. The lines become a type of automated writing. The deeper the observer penetrates into this complex net of lines, the more the real "picture" dissolves and disintegrates before one's very eyes. To initiate information, to create new information; new realities then come into being, parallel to the works original statement. The observer fills out the "empty spaces" and comes up with new meanings for the pattern through their own personal associations. Fragments of nature, at first perceived as concrete objects, transform into physical processes; landscapes reconstructed from memory tip from the concrete into the intangible, or vice versa.
In the "fuzzy" paintings simple lines lie undetermined against each other across the monochrome pictorial space, traversing with light movements and causing vibrations or resonances. They resemble traces of other worlds; worlds of which we are maybe aware of without really knowing them.
