‘The plated paintings and collages are laid out on tables as consumables. These smorgasbords reveal a mutating hybrid world of attraction and repulsion. Each ‘meal’ contains reused images plundered from historical painting. Meals are served together as an impromptu gathering of easily discardable paper plates or tin foil platters These ‘throwaways’ become an absurdly precious collection. Freshly served or exquisite leftovers, elements of the bodily, the abject and the grotesque beautifully fester.
The plates absurdly attempt to ineffectively disguise the carcass into a tantalising new delight. Initial ‘pie in the face’/’joke shop’/‘hammer horror’ humour of the undignified hybrid image, subsides and reinforces a re-looking into the original violence inflicted on the icon. Heavily sculpted paint repeats and re-concocts forms present in the original flat image allowing a slippage between two and three dimensions. The mashing together of illusion and physicality regurgitates the image and revived bones, where revulsion is pitted against the urge to ingest.
