Biography

- - - - THE RECREATING OF A WORLD THAT NEVER WAS AND CAN NEVER BE. - - - - I often think about the loss of self and a disconnection to the world and to reality while still being completely self-absorbed, self-analytical, and self-aware. There is a deep sense of exchange between the internal and external worlds. Fiction and memory in our world have been integrated and reality almost cannot exist. This disconnection of the self from itself, the other, and the world as a whole, for reasons ranging from the personal, social, and the technological are considered in my work via the imagery, humor, irony and sincerity it uses. Televised moments converge with real life, leaving us in a hyper-real state.
There is a neurotic, self-conscious, unself-consciously self-conscious, confrontational, passive aggressive and paranoid feeling operating here, but it is paired with an immeasurable freedom. The investigations of ideas and subjects that seem basic, easy, or taken for granted have always interested me and have been a driving force in my work.
The domination of one central image navigates the composition and dictates the color choices. Searching for the magic in the mundane or what some people perceive as the superficial, and my relationship with the computer screen and television has led me to heightened artificial palette choices, my catalog of imagery, and a flat graphic nature in paint handling and composition. Consequently, this creates more challenges for me to resolve both theoretically and visually. While reinventing a world that is fun, confusing, ridiculous, fantastic and dangerous, I was able to articulate spaces of thought, which have become convoluted by fantasy and distrust. I am interested in creating a world, a slight distortion of reality, in which one is confronted with familiarity amidst fantasy coupled with sarcastic humor. Pop-culture and cultural trends, music and fashion, bliss and boredom, aggression and confusion, suburbia, stupidity and beauty almost always diffused by humor (both dark and light), play into the game between irony and ambivalent sincerity in my work. There is an element of escapism at work and a search, both conceptually and technically, for the magical place where fantasy and reality meet.
