Biophilia Upstairs (2011) Graphite on Publisher's
|
Amie Bolissian's recent work has been influenced greatly by creating art, on the road, in a confined space, such as a tourbus. The themes and concerns around narrative, history and memory, including false memory and the identity of the self, have been reinterpreted through the medium of miniature graphite drawings, on publisher's blanks, ripped from the backs of unwanted novels, or large disproportionate pieces of print-making paper.
She works with a variety of magnifiying glasses and drawing implements to create a multi-layered, narratively frought, and pseudo-surreal universe, where Victorian childhood architectural nostalgia and grotesque or vulnerable anime characters meet.
Themes of memory, obsession, claustrophobia, narrative identity, oppression and vulnerability vie with a playful, theatrical joie de vivre in these intensely detailed, but not overtly decorative multi-dimensional scenes.

Whilst it is perfectly possible to appreciate the intricate drawings on the level of plain sight, assisted viewing, with a magnifying glass reveals other layers of narrative at a deeper, miniscule level.
